The real places in Arles with which Van Gogh painted his amazing paintings

In February 1888, at that time, the artist, still unknown to the whole world, Vincent Van Gogh arrived in the south of France, in a town called Arles. Inspired, he came here not just to live and work, but with the hope of creating a community of artists "Workshop of the South", where creative people could work for the future.

However, life in a quiet provincial town was not so sweet for Van Gogh. The respectable residents here were very suspicious of a man with disheveled hair, like a porcupine, walking in the streets with a hat studded with candles, and with a dangling easel. He was rather mistaken for a madman than for an artistic genius.

At the same time, he needed the light of those candles on his hat for drawing at night, when the sky was dotted to the brim with countless stars. As a rule, they refused to pose for him, and in general they were very unfriendly. Even for a small room in a local hotel, the artist was asked for a double price.

Despite overwhelming loneliness and bouts of depression, this place was of particular importance in the life of Van Gogh. In Arles, he wrote more than 180 of his works, and it was here that a famous case happened with the “Van Gogh's ear”, when in October 1888 a friend Paul Gauguin came to the artist.

Only a century later, the inhabitants of the city suddenly realized how happy this genius man had made them happy with their presence. Today, Vincent Van Gogh's paintings in the city can be found everywhere, and a whole publishing house is working on their reproduction. We will only get acquainted with a small part of those places in Arles, where an amazing artist with sweeping brush strokes applied paints to his canvases, which later became world masterpieces.
