How is dinner in 22 ordinary American families

Photographer Lois Bielefeld was instilled with a certain etiquette from childhood. In her family, supper was given almost sacred significance: it was at supper that all relatives gathered at one table, and in order to leave it, they even needed to ask permission.

Even at a young age, the future photographer realized that food is not only able to bring people together, it can become a way to study different cultures. One day, Lois wondered how the dinners in other families go, she wondered if they kept the same etiquette and whether it was customary for them to sit down to have dinner together.

That is why she decided to create her own photo project, in which she offers viewers a look at how family dinners take place among ordinary Americans from completely different social backgrounds.

The pictures of Lois Bielefeld were made in a special way: they seemed to invite the viewer to join the meal depicted on them. They make it possible to understand family habits and rituals, to feel the atmosphere prevailing at that moment.

Of course, a Monday dinner can differ significantly from a Sunday dinner, because on weekends people have much more time to prepare meals. But Lois tried to take photos for her project on weekdays, from Monday to Thursday, without affecting the weekend. Thus, she tried to show the atmosphere of the most ordinary, everyday family meal.
