Norway: then and now. Rare photos that are over 100 years old

In the modern world, Norway is deservedly considered one of the most prosperous countries. Therefore, it becomes even more interesting to look at what it was before and what it has achieved over the past 100-125 years. Thanks to these photographs taken in different eras, but from one angle, we can observe the changes that have transformed the Kingdom over the course of a century and even more.

For so many years, from 1888 to 2013, the church has not changed much. But on the road appeared asphalt, on which instead of wagons cars drive.


Photo taken in 2007. Hats are rarely seen on modern residents of Norway, but in the past 1899, no lady or gentleman could do without this wardrobe item.


If you were on Mount Turgatten, located on the island of Turget, you would certainly have a stunning view. It doesn’t matter in which year this would happen - in 1889 or 2014.


How glad to see that, even in Norway, natural wealth does not disappear over the years, but remains as rich and beautiful. Take a look, these photos were taken in 1885 and 2008!


Looking at people resting on the beach in 1947, you can see that the fashion for bathing suits has changed significantly from that moment. A modern photograph of this place was taken in 2006.


Alesund on the west coast of Norway for 109 years was densely built up. Judging by the color photograph of 2011, the construction here is still actively ongoing.


Now these large boulders are surrounded by the forest, but the man sitting here, although this is a completely different person, can still be seen.

And although the Church of Stavkirka, captured in 1902 and 2004, has not changed at all during this time, the nearby cemetery shows that many years have passed since the first photo.


Wagons and horses remained in 1887, in 2004 they were replaced by road transport.

And this is the same place, but already in 2004.

This part of the city of Kragerö has remained almost unchanged since 1906. In the frame of 2008, all the same old buildings surround the modernized street.

Trains run along this railway bridge, just like in 1927, only in 2008 they were faster and more technologically advanced.


The village of Neryoi, shot in 1890, still lives its unhurried life in 2004.
