A unique German city where rent costs 1 euro, and so for 500 years

For many of us, Germany is a European country, primarily associated with delicious sausages and fine beer. However, this place has been one of the most important centers of Europe for many centuries. In recent years, Germany ranks second in popularity among visitors from other countries. Tourists and migrants seek here because of the good standard of living of the population. In Augsburg, for example, there is a residential quarter where living costs less than 1 euro per year. It is called Fuggerei.

Fuggerei is one of the oldest social housing projects.

Housing projects for the poor were conceived and put into reality more than 500 years ago by Jacob II Fougerr and his brothers.

Fenced in a separate social quarter has 53 houses, 8 lanes and its own church.

After the Second World War, another 14 houses were erected here.

Over the years, Fuggerei has transformed, it now has everything for complete comfort.

But the price of housing has remained unchanged - 1 Rhine guilder, which is less than 1 euro per year. However, each resident is required to visit the church three times a day and pray for the family that created this quarter. There is still a curfew, and at exactly 22.00 the gates to the city are closed.

All applications from those wishing to live here are considered by a special commission. If you are a Catholic who have lived at least 2 years in Augsburg and cannot afford to rent a house, you will not be denied to settle in Fuggerai.

All residents of this social town are given the opportunity to work part-time and help in paying for utility bills. Currently, there are approximately 150 inhabitants. Beautiful old yellow houses buried in verdure, numerous flower beds, fountains and pacification reigning everywhere - all this is about the German Fuggerai.
