Canadian Lake Peyto: why it has such an amazing color of water

Peyto Lake is often called Canada’s most beautiful lake, although several more ponds can compete with it. But we can absolutely say that among the incredible variety of lakes in this country, Peyto stands out for its picturesque landscapes and amazing color of water.

Peyto belongs to the Rocky Mountains region in the southwest of the country. The lake is located at an altitude of more than 1,800 meters, where a temperate climate allows glaciers and snowfields to form. Peyto is of glacial origin and owes its formation to a glacier of the same name. But the glacier provides not only the filling of the lake, but also its stunning color. The fact is that the smallest particles of rocks are present in the water - glacial flour. This mixture is formed as a result of the friction of the glacier’s body against rocks, when a constantly moving ice mass contacts the underlying surface. At the same time, the water is completely safe, and despite the coolness, a wide variety of fish lives in the lake.

Another interesting feature of Peyto is its wolf form. From a certain angle, the lake resembles the head of a wolf or a dog, which looks intently into the distance. The lake has an elongated shape and small size, approximately 2.8 by 0.8 kilometers. From Peyto flows a river called Mistaya.

A variety of fish are found in the clean mountain lake, including trout and salmon, which along with magnificent alpine landscapes attract tourists to this mountain region. This area is part of Banff National Park, one of the best in the country. Despite the remoteness from large cities and the difficult terrain, this region of the Rocky Mountains has a developed infrastructure, and on the lake itself there are many tourist camps and campsites. This national park is one of the most popular among residents of the United States and Canada and is visited by several million people annually. Once they decided to turn this part of the Rocky Mountains into a tourist paradise, using the local natural potential, and the organizers of the park succeeded. For these purposes, a railway was built here, high-quality highways, viewing platforms and an extensive network of tourist camps and houses that can be reserved before going to nature. The park also has comfortable hotels, with golf courses and chic rooms designed for a wealthier audience.
