Chora Monastery

The second most important place after St. Sophia Cathedral, where Byzantine mosaics are preserved - the monastery of Chora. There are no less tourists than in the center, and the mosaic is no worse.

The correct name is the Church of Christ the Savior in the Fields from the monastery in Choir. This is the best preserved Byzantine church in Istanbul. Nowadays - the Karie Museum.

The name is due to the fact that before the construction of Theodosius II of the current city walls, the church stood outside the walls. The surviving building was built by Maria Duca - the mother-in-law of Emperor Alexei Komnin in 1081.

The Turks painted murals, as they usually did, and turned the temple into a Kahri Jami mosque. In 1948, the whitewash was removed and a museum was made.
