A marvelous hotel that holds the keys to the Pentagon, Frankenstein Castle and another 30,000 beds

Released in 1913, the novel "Seven Keys to Baldpat", written by the American writer Earl Derr Biggers, instantly won the readers' love. It tells about a writer who needs to create a novel in just 24 hours. So that no one bothers him, he leaves for the remote mountain hotel Baldpate Inn, which closes and does not work for the winter. The writer thinks that he has the only key to this place, but during the night another 7 guests make his way to it, each of whom also has the keys to a secluded place.

The novel turned out to be so popular that it was subsequently filmed and staged a musical on Broadway. And he inspired Gordon and Ethel Mays to rename their small, cozy hotel in Estes Park (Colorado) at the Baldpate Inn. However, they were not limited to the name alone. The owners decided to keep the storyline and gave each of their guests a personal iron key.

Such a wonderful tradition continued until the outbreak of World War I and metal prices soared. Making so many keys became too costly and policies had to be changed. However, soon after the war ended, grateful visitors to the hotel began to come here again and leave their keys here as a token of gratitude. This was the beginning of another tradition, thanks to which a unique collection of keys from around the world appeared in the Baldpate Inn.

Today, you can see more than 30,000 keys here. Moreover, many of them are truly rare and unique. So, in the windows showcases the keys to the Pentagon, Westminster Abbey, Mozart's wine cellar, Frankenstein's castle, Hitler's table and other famous places and objects. The entire collection is freely available to all comers.
